David Bowie Tribute - February 28, 2018

It was such an honor to be one of the featured guests last night with the David Bowie band celebrating his music and legacy. Such a great night.

Jane Goodall Movie "Jane" screening at Hollywood Bowl

Set to a rich orchestral score from world-renowned composer Philip Glass, the one-time-only event on Monday, Oct 9, will feature a live-to-film concert performed by a 54-piece orchestra and include special appearances by Brett Morgen, Philip Glass and the legendary Dr. Jane Goodall herself. I am honored to play at the film premiere of this movie.

Philip Glass -- who has written dozens of operas, ballets, theater music, symphonies, film scores, experimental theater and more -- had extraordinary footage to work with, featuring "characters" that were loving, protective, aggressive, mourning, jealous, nurturing, just like human beings.

Directed by Brett Morgen, who made the music doc Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck, Jane chronicles the pioneering and tenacious life of Goodall, who left her home in England in 1960 to live in Gombe Stream National Park, Tanzania, to study and research the little-known habits and behaviors of the chimpanzee population. Morgen had access to over 100 hours of never-before-seen 16mm footage shot by Dutch wildlife filmmaker -- and Goodall's future husband -- Hugo van Lawick, who died in 2002.

Monday night marked the Los Angeles premiere of the film, held at the Hollywood Bowl, and a star-studded group came out to pay tribute to Goodall's work and share what it has meant to them. Among the premiere's attendees were Angelina Jolie, Judd Apatow, Kate Bosworth, Ty Burrell, Jamie Lee Curtis and Jane Lynch, as well as Goodall herself, now 83. The screening was also open to the general public, which sold out the venue with almost 18,000 attendees.

I can not explain how powerful and moving it was to speak with Dr. Goodall after our concert at the Hollywood Bowl. I told her what a presence she was during my youth and how fascinated I was with chimpanzees and how she opened up human's perception of them. My mother taught me all about her life's work (which Dr. Goodall is still doing today at 83 years young). She shared with me how I should raise my son Henry and open his world up to conservation, the environment, climate change and our planet. She inscribed to him in the first book she ever wrote in 1961 and then wrote notes on the back of the book of things that I should teach Henry. She is such a Light! I love her.

Hollywood's Night Under the Stars: MPTF 95th Anniversary / Kirk Douglas 100th Birthday

It was so awesome to have played at Hollywood’s Night Under the Stars, a celebration of the 95th anniversary of the Motion Picture and Television Fund (MPTF).  MPTF is a charitable organization that offers  assistance and care to those in the motion picture and television industries with limited or no resources.

It was an evening of performances hosted by George Clooney, last Saturday night October 1, at the MPTF's Wasserman Campus in Woodland Hills, California.

Musical performances included a Les Miserables medley from Jean Valjean himself, Hugh Jackman, while Derek Hough donned his tap shoes for a rendition of “Singing in the Rain.” Loretta Devine belted out “Listen” from the film version of Dreamgirls and surprise guest Kevin Spacey – an active participant in the organization – took the stage for Sinatra’s “Can I Steal a Little Love?” Bob Dylan’s “Mr. Bojangles.” Campus resident Helen Reddy’s evoked nostalgia with “You and Me Against the World” as did Johnny Mathis with his signature song, “Misty.”

But the special part of the evening was a tribute by Michael Douglas to his father, Kirk Douglas, who turns 100 on Dec. 9.  It was an early birthday celebration and I was so honored to play "Happy Birthday" for this legendary actor.

Recording at Barbra Streisand Scoring Stage

Had a thrilling week in the studio with Barbra Streisand. We recorded at Sony Studios on the Barbra Streisand Scoring Stage. I do a lot of work on this stage but it's not often you get to record with the person the scoring stage is named for.

This is my fifth album I've had the pleasure of working on with Barbra and she sounds as beautiful as ever. We got to play the exquisite arrangements of Bill Ross under his baton with the brilliant Walter Afanasieff producing. The entire group of LA musicians sound gorgeous on these arrangements.  It was a true thrill.

Join us for this star-studded tribute to one of Broadway's great masters.

I am so thrilled to be a part of this wonderful day honoring my friend and musical luminary Stephen Schwartz.  I will be performing from 5:30-8:00pm on Saturday April 16 at  Peter Jay Sharpe Theater at Symphony Space in NYC.

Halloween at the Hollywood Bowl

Some pics from the last two night's shows at the Bowl. Tim Burton's Nightmare Before Christmas live to picture with full orchestra, choir and the entire original cast who sang on the soundtrack! The legendary composer Danny Elfman as Jack Skellington at the helm with Katherine O'Hara and Paul Reubens singing along with him. I have had the honor of recording on several of Danny's movie soundtracks and it is always a treat to perform live on stage with him.
